The Port of Oakland, located on the East shore of the San Francisco Bay and established in 1927, functions not just as an international cargo and transportation hub but also operates the Oakland International Airport, manages the seaport and acts as steward for the Oakland area waterfront. In 2017, the port experienced its busiest year yet - a continuation of years of economic development in the area that has been felt in the revival of previously industrial neighborhoods which are now becoming home to a thriving community of mixed-use real estate, recreational areas and civic spaces.
One of the notable successes of Port of Oakland in relatively recent history is the redevelopment of Jack London Square. Named after the American author and naturalist who spent much of his childhood on the Oakland waterfront, Jack London Square is now a vibrant business and entertainment destination with mixed-use development that includes retail businesses, restaurants and residences. The area, which was formerly industrial with no public access to the waterfront, has transformed in recent decades, leading the way for other East Bay development.
Recently, another site within Port of Oakland jurisdiction has been approved for redevelopment that will affect the entire area. In the nineties, after the Oakland Army Base was decommissioned as part of the Defense Department's Realignment and Closure Act, that prime location 360 acre+ real estate near Oakland's outer harbor was granted to the City of Oakland and placed within the Port’s jurisdiction for planning and redevelopment. The site was considered for many different land-uses before it was approved for use as a logistics complex.

Landtech Consultants is serving as civil engineer for development of the 27-acre CenterPoint Landing distribution center. The new cargo distribution facility will be located off of Maritime and 14th streets, just south of the eastern entrance to the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.
The land use for the distribution facility was approved in November 2017 after 15 years of planning. CenterPoint Landing distribution center will be the largest of its kind on the West Coast and as a result the project was the subject of negotiations between the project principals, the Port of Oakland, Revive Oakland and Oakland Works, to ensure that the community benefits from fair economic development and that many of the hundreds of jobs created by the new facility will go to local workers.
The first phase of the new complex will cover 440,000 square feet and will eventually expand to cover 180 acres of the 364 acres previously used for the army base. Construction is expected to begin in summer of this year.
